Crowds gather at the Rio Nido Roadhouse to cast ballots at last year’s Spaghetti Cook-Off fundraiser for the Guerneville School
Sunday, October 17th, 3:00-6:00pm at the Rio Nido Roadhouse
14540 Canyon Two Rd, Rio Nido, CA 95471. (707) 869-0821
If you love good food and good company, and want to support the Guerneville School, join your friends, neighbors, and aspiring local pasta chefs for the 2nd Annual Spaghetti Cook-Off. Held on Sunday October 17th from 3:00pm-6:00pm at the Rio Nido Roadhouse, this fun, festive, and family-friendly event costs $10 to enter your tasty creations; $20 per adult (includes dinner and two raffle tickets); $10 per child (ages 5-12, includes dinner and one raffle ticket); and a special rate for a family of five ($50 includes dinner and five raffle tickets). Children under five can attend free.
Organized by Guerneville School parents Lori Babcock, Kristen Boland, Jaime Wilson, and Jenny Zapp, the event will include the spaghetti sauce tasting (3:00-4:00pm); dinner (4:30-6:00pm); announcement of the raffle and spaghetti sauce winners (6:00pm), an art contest for grades 6-8; and live music from Gamma Rhythm. Prizes include fine local wines, one night get-aways from local resorts, certificates from local merchants, and more! The lucky winner will be presented with an award by local personality and 5th District County Supervisor Efren Carrillo. All proceeds go to the Guerneville School.
Businesses, artists, artisans, winemakers, trades people, and others can also lend a hand – while promoting their work at this popular and well-attended event – by donating goods or coupons for services as raffle prizes. Monetary donations and help from volunteers are also highly welcome.
For more information about entering the contest or sponsoring this event, please contact Lori at 869-8384, Kristen at 869-9412, or gfundraiser@yahoo.com by October 11th.
Last Fall’s event attracted over 100 people and raised $4600 to keep afloat the Guerneville School’s innovative and well-loved Garden, Nutrition and Environmental Education Program. Local resident Walt Perkins took the honors for Best Spaghetti Sauce. Allocating this year’s funds may prove more challenging, due to the negative effects of severe budget cuts on the Guerneville School’s visual arts, music, physical education, library services, computer lab, garden, and other important enrichment programs.
“I hope lots of folks will come and participate, because we’re facing a tough year” states a Guerneville School parent, “Plus, it’ll be tons of fun!”

On August 8th, the RNHOA hosted a delicious Pancake Breakfast, which was enjoyed by over 100 neighbors and visitors … especially those who sampled the mimosas. Or bloody marys, ramos fizzes, and other yummy concoctions. Long-time Rio Nidan John Colonico sure knows how to mix those drinks! The Pancake Breakfasts are held twice per summer, and include generous helpings of pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, orange juice, and coffee. For $6.00 per adult and $3.00 per child, that’s a great deal. Afterwards, we showcased local talent at the Rio Nido Arts Festival, including: Edward Garcia, Vincinza Gregori, Bruce Fossum, Don Wilson, Patty Bird, Matt Bedford, Tom Azevedo, Beverly Bird, Rebecca Lichau, Seneca Rising, and Moire Martin.
On August 3rd, neighbors gathered at the Rio Nido Roadhouse for National Night Out – a celebration promoted as “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” Sponsored by Rio Nido Home Owners Association and the Rio Nido Roadhouse, the event featured a delicious assortment of potluck dishes from neighbors, along with free hamburgers, hot dogs, and iced-tea. Folks from the Sheriff’s Department and the Russian River Fire Protection District also had a demonstration for the kids and let them try on some of their high-tech gear. Big thanks to Brad Metzger and Kim Link from the Roadhouse, and to Doug Misner, president of the RNHOA for organizing this event. The Rio Nido Clean-Up was held on July 9th-10th 2010.
Rio Nido Task Force Beautification Committee Lead Jennifer Ostrom reports that this year’s Rio Nido Clean Up (held on July 9th and 10th) was a HUGE success! Thanks to our hard-working volunteers, dumpsters provided by Redwood Empire Disposal (with huge help from Pam Davis), and Dennis Judd/Cipora Properties who provided the Rio Nido Lodge as the clean-up site, we made major progress.
Despite the fact that budget cuts have drastically reduced resources vis-à-vis previous clean-ups, we got a LOT done! While volunteers on foot slogged along the roadside & through creek beds to collect trash and debris, the guys in trucks still managed to collect piles of junk from folks who can’t afford trips to the dump, plus tons of tree limbs, construction debris, tires, chunks of cement, and scary toxic substances which burned holes in the gloves of our very own intrepid garbage-picker, Kim Holliday!
Jennifer enthused that the cleanup truly exceeded her expectations and wanted to officially thank the contributors to the cleanup, which include (with apologies to those for whom we do not have last names):
Pamela Davis of Redwood Empire Disposal; Brad Metzger for copies & donuts (split with Homeowner’s Association); Domenic Farnocchia for logistics ; Matt Malik & Jay; Ingrid Emming & Nate Lester; Fred Beeler ; Johnnie Etheredge; Alexander;Thomas; Randi Watson; Jeremy; Kim Holliday; Frank; Matt Bedford; Ron Boles; Elisabeth Parker; Vicki Cunningham; and Ann Thomas
Future clean-ups: Jennifer aims to implement these clean-ups four times per year on a seasonal/quarterly basis. Several people chimed in that they would chip in for future such events, others suggested we might get RRROC funds for this.

The smell of sweet success wafted through Rio Nido during the weekend of July 17th and 18th, as neighbors and visitors enjoyed Saturday evening’s Marshmallow Roast followed by Sunday morning’s Pancake Breakfast. Luckily, Susie Merkell kept the Pee Wee Mini Golf open for both events so kids could channel their sugar rushes while adults worked off all the calories consumed!
Nearly 20 kids gathered at 7pm to roast marshmallows, make s’mores, and watch Pink Panther cartoons on the big screen. Sponsored by the RNHOA and organized by Domenic and Suzanne Farnocchia, a fun time was had kids and adults alike. The next morning from 9am-noon, neighbors sat down to the RNHOA’s delicious, hearty pancake breakfast with scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausages, orange juice, and coffee. Those inclined (& over 21) could also indulge in a bloody mary, ramos fizz, champagne mimosa and other yummy drinks.
Don’t miss the next Pancake Breakfast (followed by the Rio Nido Art Show with face painting for the kids) on Sunday August 8th!
